Circa 2002.

I was living in Japan and teaching English conversation at the time. My days off were often spent cycling around, visiting cultural landmarks, seeking out interesting shops, museums and always visiting The Loft department store to find something in the Art and stationery department to do something creative with.

I don’t remember exactly when I made these paper collages but I do remember that they were inspired by seeing all the beautiful wooden kokeshi dolls afer a trip to Kyoto.

These sweet little faces remind me of that time. They travelled back with me to Australia in 2009 and have been stored flat in a sketchbook ever since.
