The year was 2011. Our daughter was 2 and our son was almost 4. Sleep was often disturbed for all of us. Most parents will be familiar with the broken sleep of early years or the difficulty of actually getting kids to fall asleep. And there was always advice from the ‘experts’ on teaching kids to self settle. In the end, what worked for me was simply holding my kids when they wanted comfort. I would often nod off to sleep in the process and lay them gently back in their little beds and drag myself off the floor to return to my desk. And this was one of those little illustrations from that time. ‘Embrace’ became my visual pattern representing two bodies, arms encircled, night after night.
